Presentation Tips
Delivering a good presentation requires proper preparation.
Most of the preparation involves focusing on small details,
but the time and effort required should not be underestimated.

Here are some common pitfalls for presenters and simple ways to avoid them
Saving Your Presentation
Avoid Chaos ♫₤☼♣€Ω
  • In MS PowerPoint, select “Save As” → “PowerPoint Show” and name your file as follows:
  • Weekday_YourName.pps or Weekday_YourName.ppsx (e.g., Friday_GoodPresenter.ppsx)
  • Do not use ppt or pptx files, and do not include the presentation title or any other text in the file name.
  • Make sure to embed fonts in the PowerPoint save options; otherwise, your presentation may become corrupted.
Reducing File Size
Avoid Waiting for Slides
  • Very high-resolution images are usually unnecessary. Typical data projectors display at about 96–150–330 ppi.
  • Large, high-resolution images like photographs are not required.
  • PowerPoint provides a simple tool to compress images:
    1. Double-click an image in your slide.
    2. In the menu, select “Compress Pictures”.
    3. Choose 330 ppi to compress all images.
  • If you need the original images for printing or PDF conversion, save a separate copy.
Time Per Slide
Avoid Being Cut Off by the Session Chair
  • Conference presentations are often too long, but there’s no need for that!
  • Allocate 1.5–2 minutes per slide, including title and thank-you slides.
  • A 15-minute presentation typically requires 8–10 slides (up to 15 slides if well organized).
  • Sessions run simultaneously; when time is up, the session chair will stop presentations.
What to Avoid
Creating an Effective Presentation
  • Automatic slide transitions: Do not use timed slide changes for conference presentations.
  • Excessive animations: Limit animations to one or two types. Attendees have already seen plenty of flying slides and graphs.
  • Video sequences: Only include videos if you are confident in using them. Otherwise, omit them.
  • Advanced formats (ppsm): Only for experts. Non-experts should avoid these formats.
